The Fantasy Life and the Beauty of Slowing Down: Reflections on May and the Beginning of June
As May came to an end and June quietly arrived, I found myself reflecting on how differently I experience life compared to a few years ago.
There was a time when I was fascinated by what I now call the "fantasy life"—the idea that happiness could be found in constantly chasing the next thing. A better version of ourselves, a different lifestyle, a new experience, a future moment when everything would finally feel complete. It is a mindset that many of us absorb without even realising it, encouraged by social media, advertising, and the endless pressure to keep moving forward.
Over the past few years, however, I have found myself drawn towards something much slower and far more meaningful.
May was a beautiful reminder of that.
The month seemed to arrive wrapped in flowers. Everywhere I looked, nature was putting on a display of colour and life. Trees were full again, gardens were blooming, and the parks I visited felt alive with the energy of a season finally settling into itself. Spending time outdoors became one of my favourite ways to slow down and reconnect with the present moment.
One of the highlights of the month was another visit to Petworth House with my partner. Although I have visited before, this time I found myself paying closer attention to the house itself. Walking through rooms that have witnessed centuries of history has a way of putting modern life into perspective. Surrounded by craftsmanship, art, and stories that have endured for generations, I was reminded that the most meaningful things are rarely created in haste.
Sharing experiences like this with someone you love changes them too. Love has a quiet way of influencing our lives. It encourages us to be more present, more patient, and more appreciative of moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Some of my favourite memories from the past few months have not been extraordinary adventures but simple moments spent together, talking, walking, and exploring places that allow us to step away from the rush of everyday life.
Of course, life has not been entirely slow. I have been working hard at my full-time job, and like many people, balancing responsibilities can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet alongside my regular work, I have also been dedicating time to my candle business. Over the past few weeks I have been developing personalised labels, refining ideas, and preparing my vanilla candles and summer collection for launch.
Creating candles remains one of the most rewarding parts of my life. There is something deeply satisfying about taking an idea and slowly turning it into a finished product. The process requires patience, experimentation, and attention to detail. In a world that often celebrates speed, candle making reminds me that some things simply cannot be rushed.
As I worked on my summer collection, I found myself thinking about how quickly the seasons move. It feels as though we have only just welcomed spring, yet summer is already knocking on the door. Before long, many small business owners, myself included, will begin thinking about autumn and winter collections. The rhythm of seasonal business teaches you to live slightly ahead of the calendar while also appreciating the season you are currently in.
Perhaps that is one of the lessons May and the beginning of June have offered me. While it is important to plan for the future, it is equally important not to miss the present.
The fantasy life tells us that happiness exists somewhere ahead. The slower life teaches us that happiness is often already here, hidden in everyday moments. It can be found in flowers blooming after a long winter, in a walk through a historic house, in the comfort of a loving relationship, in meaningful work, and in creating something with your own hands.
As summer begins, I hope to carry that lesson with me. There will always be another goal to reach, another collection to design, and another season to prepare for. But there is also value in pausing long enough to appreciate where we are right now.
For me, that is what May was about: not chasing a fantasy, but finding beauty in a life that is already real.
Creating candles remains one of the most rewarding parts of my life. Over the past few weeks, I have been working on personalised labels, refining my vanilla candles, and preparing my summer collection for launch. What began as a creative hobby has gradually become an extension of the slower lifestyle I have been trying to embrace.
Every candle I make is designed with that intention in mind. In a world that often encourages us to rush, a candle invites us to pause. To sit with a cup of coffee a little longer. To enjoy an evening with a book. To create a calm atmosphere after a busy day. These small rituals may seem insignificant, but they often become the moments we remember most.
As summer begins, I hope to carry the lessons of May with me. There will always be another goal to reach, another collection to design, and another season to prepare for. But there is also value in appreciating where we are right now.
If you, too, are trying to slow down and create more meaningful moments in your day, perhaps my candles can become a small part of that journey. Whether it's a personalised gift for someone special or a vanilla candle for your own quiet evenings, my hope is that each one brings a little warmth, comfort, and calm into your home.
After all, a slower life is not about doing less. It's about making more space for what matters.
